Do those express wash places actually clean properly or just scratch the paint?

I used to wash my car myself every Friday but with work and the newborn at home I’ve basically given up and started using the express wash near the petrol station. Problem is I’ve started noticing fine scratches all over the bonnet, those spiderweb type marks that show up under the sun, and I’m wondering if it’s the brushes at those places or if I’m just being paranoid. Also do any of these places do a decent job on the inside without charging for a full detail? I mainly just need the dust and sand out of the footwells.
