    Air conditioner companies, which includes window and transportable models, have had to make several changes recently. This is due to a thing called the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Standards (RoHS) passed by the European Union a few years back, and US laws limiting manufacture and use of specific hazardous substances. Part of these standards include cutting back on the old R22 refrigerant, which has long been known as an ozone depleting agent.
    Consumers looking for a brand new window or portable air conditioning should take note of the refrigerant in the versions they are considering. R22 designs remain available, even though the ROHS called for manufacturers to avoid making R22 by 2010. Many manufacturers have made the changeover, but a few yet have older designs they want to market off. This is not unlawful yet, but there are several problems that consumers might wish to consider.

    R410A is undoubtedly more eco helpful than R22, since it does not produce hydrofluorocarbons like R22 does. Therefore R410A does not deplete the ozone layer. But this’s not the only benefit. R410A is essentially a better refrigerant for several reasons.
    To begin with, R410A transfers heat each way (absorbing and releasing) more readily than R22, so that it is a better refrigerant. What this translates to would be that the device can run at cooler temperatures while still maintaining a similar air cooling capacity. This reduces the threat of overheating substantially and likely prolongs a unit’s lifespan.
    Furthermore, the lubrication utilized with R410A is artificial, designed to mix better than those used with R22. Meaning the refrigerant flows more easily and moving parts are improved moisturized, also converting to less wear as well as tear.
    Third, since R410A operates at increased pressures than R22, the recently developed coils are heavier duty to withstand the stress. A nice side effect would be that since they’re thicker, they vibrate less – another reduction in damage.
    Finally, since refrigerant companies can’t make R22 any more, over time the world supplies will deplete. The different physical properties of the two refrigerants require different system designs, and they are not interchangeable. What this means is costs for recharging R22 is going up as it gets scarce. The US has called for a thorough changeover by 2015, at what time it is going to be unlawful to work with also recycled R22 to recharge systems.
